If you aren't sure what your pipes are made of, use the "Hot Tap Water" method. Turn your tap to the hottest setting and let it run for 5–10 minutes. Most residential water heaters are set to 120°F, which is hot enough to melt soap scum but safe for pipes.

Boiling water is a useful tool for maintenance and soft clogs, but it should be used with caution. If your drain is completely blocked (standing water), boiling water will not help—you likely need a drain snake or a plunger.
