Party Down | S01e09 Ac3 ((free))
This episode is the penultimate chapter of Season 1, written by John Enbom and directed by Bryan Gordon . It aired on May 23, 2009. Core Plot Summary The Party Down crew is hired to cater the 20th high school reunion of James Rolf High School (a fictional school). The twist: most of the team attended that same high school. This forces them to confront old social hierarchies, past humiliations, and faded dreams.
Henry was the cool, artistic guy. He’s dreading being recognized as a "failure." Ron was a "nobody" and sees this as a chance to finally be popular. Kyle was a star athlete who peaked at 18. Roman was a bullied nerd, now bitter and vengeful.
The reunion is held in the school’s gym, decorated in cheap, nostalgic purple and white. Scene-by-Scene Breakdown & Key Moments 1. The Setup: Returning to the Battlefield
The team parks in the same student lot. Ron is overly enthusiastic ("Tonight, we’re not caterers! We’re students again!"). Henry immediately tries to quit, but Ron guilt-trips him. The school’s decor includes a "memory board" of photos. Henry’s photo is prominently displayed with his ex-girlfriend, actress Molly McManus (now a TV star). This foreshadows her arrival. party down s01e09 ac3
2. The Alpha Dog Cold Open
Kyle spots his high school rival Rick Gergen (now a used car salesman) and challenges him to a push-up contest. Roman mutters about "jocks" and "atrophy of the cerebral cortex." Kyle wins the push-up contest (barely), but then his back seizes up. He spends most of the episode in pain, revealing his physical prime is over.
3. Ron’s "Popular" Fantasy
Ron buys an expensive "Class of '89" varsity jacket from a student (it’s a reproduction, but he doesn’t know). He tries to insert himself into conversations with former cool kids, using terrible slang ("That is so fly "). His peak humiliation: he tries to recreate a high school dance move called "The Donald" (a weird, arm-flapping thing). Everyone stares in silence. A classmate says, "Weren't you the guy who ate a bug for a dollar?"
4. Henry and the Ghost of Cool Past
Henry is cornered by former friends who now work in finance. They mock his "Party Down" shirt: "Still doing the catering thing? That's... authentic." His ex-girlfriend Molly (played by Kristen Bell in a brilliant cameo) arrives. She’s now a famous actress on a CSI -type show. Their conversation is painfully real: she’s surprised he’s not an actor or writer. He lies and says he’s "taking time off." She’s kind but distant, revealing she’s engaged to her co-star. Key line : Molly: "You were the only person I thought would actually do something." Henry: "Yeah, well. Doing something is overrated." This episode is the penultimate chapter of Season
5. Roman’s Revenge
Roman runs into Steve "The Snake" Szymanski , a former bully who stole his "Predator vs. Aliens" screenplay in 10th grade. Steve is now a producer on a terrible reality show called So You Think You Can Decorate? Steve admits he sold Roman’s script (lightly rewritten) as a SyFy original movie called Reptilicus vs. Xenomorphs . Roman is livid but powerless. Roman tries to pour a tray of shrimp on Steve’s head but gets tackled by security.
