"What does this tell you?" she asked.
"One last thing," Sarah said. "The Head."
"Precisely. It’s passive," Sarah said. She then drew a second silhouette. This one had a jagged, triangular spine, an elongated neck craning forward, and a knife that extended far past the hand, creating a sharp tangent against the negative space.
"Don't thank me yet," Sarah said, heading for the door. "Volume 16 is just the beginning. Next week is Volume 17: Color Theory and Emotion. You might want to rethink those greens."
Leo rotated the arm out. A triangle of empty space opened up. Suddenly, the character felt airier, more dynamic.
Sarah nodded, a small smile playing on her lips. "Now, black out the model. Let's look at the shadow."
"Now, the Negative Space," Sarah pointed to the gap between the character’s arm and his torso. "You closed the gap. That makes him look thick, heavy. Open it up. Let the light cut through there. It creates visual interest and makes the character feel lighter, more agile."
"That he’s... small? Hiding?"
